ON THE GREEN...
GET YOUR SWING ON!
I never gave Golf much thought as a form of "exercise". In my mind it's a social, retired mans, leisure game. Then of course there's the famous Tiger Woods, who in my opinion, has made Golf look more exciting, especially to the younger viewer....which is exactly why I'm here watching my seven year-old son Devin's golf lesson. As I'm observing his lesson his instructor Joaquin Herbozo brought out 2 wobble boards for him to stand on and take a swing. Now I have worked in gyms for many years and I know how difficult it can be just to stand on them and balance-never less take a swing. By the end of that lesson Joaquin also mentioned Golf is exercise. With that being said, my interest was peaked.
I booked a private lesson with Joaquin who is the 1st Assistant Golf Professional at Debell Golf Club in Burbank, California. He has been teaching there for the past 6 years. I quickly learned that golf requires balance, flexibility and stamina. All components of exercise I thought. Joaquin says "no matter what your level of golf game is...it requires fitness." "When you mix exercise with golf, it puts that person one step ahead of the game, he says." As we get older, club hit speed decreases due to old age and lack of flexibility. Walking up some of those slopes is definitely cardiovascular....so lose the golf cart and carry those clubs! An 18-hole golf course can be anywhere from 3 to 4 miles. What a way to get in touch with the beautiful "greens". Speaking of beautiful greens, Justin Timberlake who is an avid golfer recently saved a struggling golf course that was about to be auctioned off and made it Eco-Friendly.
I find that when I am out there on the green, just how peaceful and relaxed I am. I'm continuing my lessons and have amazed myself how much I love this sport!
